Ros Cuthbert RWA
Ros Cuthbert was born in 1951 in Weston-super-Mare. She took the Art Foundation Course at Somerset College of Art and went on to study Painting at the Central School of Art and Design (now Central St Martin’s) in London and then an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art.

Winning a prestigious prize in the National Portrait Gallery Competition in 1981 opened opportunities as a portrait painter, and Ros has painted many portraits including Cecil Collins (collection: Contemporary Art Society) and Leonard Cheshire and Sue Ryder (collection: National Portrait Gallery). Her figures, landscapes and still lives, handmade books and prints are in private collections worldwide. Work in public collections includes the National Portrait Gallery, the V&A, Royal College of Art, National Poetry Library, and the Contemporary Art Society.

In 1998 Ros was elected an RWA Academician and in 2005 she became a member of the St Ives Society of Artists after acting as an Arts Council consultant for the Society.

For the second year running she is represented at The Other Art Fair, the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol. Ros is also a jazz singer and lyricist.
Ros lives in Winscombe and with her husband David, teaches drawing and painting at The Art Shed.
"Making art from discarded stuff, giving it a new and poetic function alongside paint and drawing materials is an immense pleasure, an adventure. Working with collage is like putting a disruptor in the mix. If I have an idea for a painting, collage can lead me on a merry dance before I get the painting resolved. It will provide accidental associations, colours, texture and so on, and will also challenge me to find a resolution to the visual problems I have generated which will lead to an unanticipated outcome. I like the way collage can inject energy, bite, humour and instability to both process and result."
