 Roger Ellicott

"I was born and raised in Battersea, South London and at the age of 22, moved out to Monmouth, South Wales before finally crossing over to the sunny side of the Bristol Channel and Weston-super-Mare in 2003.

As a child I was always drawing or colouring-in; encouraged by my father who used to paint in oils. Although I could never get on with the poster paints supplied at school, I still left with an A Level in Art (Still Life in pencil and chalks). I didn’t go to Art School or really do much with my art after I left (the odd drawing or homemade video cover) until about a 15 years ago when I met my husband to be and listed amongst my interests painting and drawing; and he said "Paint me something". So I picked up a paint brush for the first time in years and painted him a picture of a house and tree (singular) on the top of a multicoloured hill against a lurid purple sky. It was my first step as an artist and I haven’t looked back since, exploring the use of colours and shapes in both the natural and imaginary world.

Although I have been to a few art classes (Life Model drawing) I’m predominantly self-taught. I have toyed with the idea of going back and doing an Arts Degree but would rather just get on with creating something in the little free time I have than studying. My medium of choice is Acrylics. I like them for their quick drying properties and vibrant colours. You can use them to achieve a "watercolour" or "oil" effect painting. I tend to use them mainly as an "oil", for their thick consistency and stronger colour."
